About Auhekeroa
“He mahi kai hoaka, he mahi kai takata”
Kāi Tahu Whakataukī
Literally as sandstone is consumed in its action of shaping prized pounamu, so too are people consumed by their work.
The interpretation is, the treasure of success or success itself is gained through giving all to the enterprise.
Kōrero o te Whakaahua (Design Explanation)
Auheke is to surf, glide on the sea. Roa is to do this in a continuous way on a long wave in motion.
So “auhekeroa” literally implies the motion of surfing on a long continuous wave. It is to imply continued and ongoing success.
The sensation of a waka gliding down the wave and picking up momentum to hurry it onto the island on its journey. It is about implying success, continually striving for the end goal. Controlled power.
The image shows the "Tauihu (Prow of a Māori waka) and the furling wave with the smooth water on either side of the wave.
The saying incorporated with the letter head is, “kia kererū ai te wai.”
"Kia kererū ai te wai."
This talks to the colour of the smooth water on either side of the wave or wake, which has the rich, dark deep greens, blues and black almost of the plumage on the kererū or wood pigeon. It is the smooth water created to the side of the wake as a waka, or surfboard rides the wave. This shows the journey is smooth and going well.
